Deferred vs Postponed FERS Retirement: What’s the Difference?

If you’re leaving federal service before taking your pension, you’ll likely encounter two confusing terms:

Deferred Retirement and Postponed Retirement

They sound similar—but financially, they are very different.

The Key Difference (Simple Version)

  • Deferred Retirement = Leave federal service and take your pension later (with major limitations)
  • Postponed Retirement = Leave at MRA and delay your pension to reduce penalties

What Is Deferred Retirement?

Deferred retirement applies when you:

  • Leave federal service before reaching MRA
  • Have at least 5 years of service
  • Choose to claim your pension later

Example:

  • Leave at age 50
  • Claim pension at 62

Downsides of Deferred Retirement

This is where people get burned:

  • ❌ No FEHB in retirement
  • ❌ No FERS Supplement
  • ❌ Limited survivor benefits
  • ❌ No access to early retirement advantages

What Is Postponed Retirement?

Postponed retirement applies when you:

  • Reach MRA with at least 10 years
  • Choose to delay your pension start date

Example:

  • Leave at 57 (MRA)
  • Start pension at 62

Benefits of Postponed Retirement

  • ✅ Avoid MRA+10 reduction
  • ✅ Potentially keep FEHB (if done correctly)
  • ✅ Higher lifetime pension
  • ✅ Better long-term income

Example Comparison

Deferred:

  • Leave at 50
  • Pension at 62
  • No FEHB
  • Lower total value

Postponed:

  • Leave at 57
  • Pension at 62
  • Possible FEHB retention
  • Higher pension

FEHB Is the Biggest Factor

This is the most important difference.

Deferred:

❌ You lose FEHB permanently

Postponed:

✅ You may keep FEHB if you meet the 5-year rule

This alone can be worth thousands per year.

FERS Supplement Impact

  • Deferred: ❌ No supplement
  • Postponed: ❌ Still no supplement

Only immediate retirements qualify.

When Deferred Might Make Sense

  • Leaving federal service early
  • Not planning to rely on federal benefits
  • Using other retirement systems

When Postponed Is Better

  • You reach MRA
  • You want to avoid pension reductions
  • You want to preserve FEHB
  • You want stronger retirement income

5 Common Mistakes

  1. Confusing deferred and postponed
  2. Losing FEHB accidentally
  3. Not planning pension timing
  4. Ignoring reduction rules
  5. Not modeling income scenarios
